Why Hypnotherapy?

At ACT Personal Development we offer Hypnotherapy to our clients to address some of the mental health issues that sometimes arise. These issues can be anything from anxiety, depression, anger, phobias or insomnia. Mental health challenges prevent us from being effective in our lives and rob us of life’s joy.  The good news is that we need not suffer there is help out there.

ACT Hypnotherapy complements Coaching and the ACT approach. Hypnotherapy addresses the negative mindset caused by anxiety, depression and anger. As a result it supports you the client in developing a positive, resilient, focused mindset. With the positive mindset coaching and the ACT change strategy is even more effective

What is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is a powerful and yet gentle and safe way of making positive changes in your life. It is based on clinical research, on how we and our minds work.

At ACT we practice Solution Focused Hypnotherapy (SFHT). As the name suggests, rather than focusing on past problems, SFHT focuses on developing a compelling and engaging future. This is in contrast to other types of hypnotherapy whose focus is on problems, and the past (sometimes on unpleasant and traumatic events) with the aim to resolve these events. Both strategies have their benefits. However at ACT we believe that it is more effective to hold a solution in mind rather than a problem. This approach is in line with coaching and the ACT courses.

One of the main premises of SFHT is that we already know all the answers to our questions, or how to find them. However what stops us accessing those answers is that our attention is taken up by emotions such as anxiety, anger and depression.

SFHT strategy helps remove these blocks, freeing us up to find our own solutions.

The two elements which support removing these blocks

Therapy

This is the talking bit of hypnotherapy and is similar to coaching. Through this talking therapy you the client identifies what you want rather than what you don’t want. Willingness to take action towards that goal is generated by increasing the your sense of wellbeing through the 3P strategy, i.e. positive action, positive interaction and positive thinking.  When we do the 3P’s we generate the wellbeing neurotransmitter serotonin. Serotonin helps us relax, makes us less anxious, less depressed or angry. Consequently this opens up our minds, giving us access to our natural solution finding capabilities.

Hypnosis

This is a perfectly natural phenomenon, it’s something that we do, all the time. We go into trance when we are absorbed in a film or when we are driving a car. Hypnotherapy uses this natural ability, to have a sustained concentrated focus, to help us relax and imagine a different future. When in a relaxed state we can process the events of our day in a positive way. We do this using the REM process (rapid eye movement). REM helps convert the emotional elements of our day into a more narrative memory. The consequence of that is that we have control over that memory.

This is where the phrase “Let me sleep on it” comes from, when we sleep the event of our day are processed and when we wake up we can think more clearly and often have a healthier perspective on the situations in our life. Over time our stress bucket is emptied, a little bit like a pressure cooker, and we have more processing capacity to make better choices in life.

The two elements of hypnotherapy, i.e. therapy and hypnosis, are a powerful combination that can help us return to our real selves.
